Green Jobs

Maximizing investment of new green jobs resources

Workers receive green jobs trainingIn the fall of 2008, the City released the Chicago Climate Action Plan (CCAP), a roadmap for reducing Chicago’s greenhouse gas emissions.

To complement this effort, the Mayor’s office launched Chicago Green Jobs for All (now housed at CWIC) to develop a trained workforce to carry out the Plan and to connect workforce opportunities to communities in need through job training and placement. As part of this initiative, CWIC has:

  • Completed a detailed labor market analysis  to project the demand for jobs in Chicago's emerging green jobs sector

  • Used findings to secure and manage a $3 million State Energy Sector grant to train 600 Chicagoans in energy efficiency retrofitting skills

  • Partnered with building trade unions to increase opportunities for disadvantaged and minority workers

  • Presented findings to employment service providers to help them direct their clients toward the right training and job opportunities
